"Racer" is an ongoing body of work that Garrett Phelan has been working on since 1997. It essentially comprises a single-shot, rotating video of a Martello Tower situated on Donabate beach in North County Dublin. This video is an attempt by Phelan to 'capture the inexplicability of the moment and the beauty inherent in that concept.' Alongside the creation of the "Racer" film, the artist also undertook a period of research, referred to as "Untitled", in which he explored the tower's location. In one series, he photographed the fauna of the area around the Martello tower in the video; in another he took photographs of creatures such as caterpillars in a child's hand and on his knee; further research lead to the artist undertaking a long coastal walk - mapping the Martello Towers that are placed along the Dublin coast. This publication is the first by Phelan to concentrate on the Untitled part of Racer. Photographs are reproduced throughout alongside a transcript of Phelan in conversation with Francis McKee.
