Skin / Deep: Perspectives on the Body features innovative work by nine
artists from, or living and working, in Ireland, reflecting the diversity of
contemporary photographic and lens-based practices. The artists all take
an expanded view of the social, psychological, and material realities of
embodiment – of being a ‘body’ in the world. In their varied practices they
confront societal norms and perceptions, encouraging a dialogue about
authenticity and self-acceptance.
Using their own experiences, the artists in Skin / Deep present ways of
thinking about gender, identity and sexuality that have only recently
begun to be acknowledged in Irish society. Photo Museum Ireland is
dedicated to providing a platform for artists addressing these key social
issues through their work, which we are undertaking as part of our wider
institutional commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in the arts.
This catalogue, with an essay by exhibition curator Darren Campion,
serves as a visual and contextual companion to the featured works.
Photobooks are an essential part of the art form of photography. To date,
this has been an under-developed aspect of photographic practice
in Ireland. This publication is part of Photo Museum Ireland’s IMPRINT
series, a publishing and residency initiative supporting artists in the
development, design and production of catalogues, photobooks, and
artists’ monographs. It offers participating artists the opportunity to
be mentored by a panel of leading international curators, artists and
photobook publishers.
Our publishing initiatives bring the work of artists featured in our
programmes to wider audiences, creating open dialogues to critically
frame contemporary photographic practices, and leaving an important
record for the future. This builds on Photo Museum Ireland’s legacy
of supporting artists’ practices since 1978, connecting with diverse
communities, and stimulating debate on the role of photography in
visual culture.
Featured artists:
Shia Conlon, Jane Cummins, Phelim Hoey, Pradeep Mahadeshwar, Pauline Rowan, Vera Ryklova, Pádraig Spillane, Brian Teeling, and Nazli Yildirim.
Curated by Darren Campion, Photo Museum Ireland
