Hi Tone Books

Toraigh / Tory Island, Eric Luke (Pre-order)

Description

Toraigh / Tory Island will launch in Photo Museum Ireland Bookshop on Wednesday 24 June at 6:00 pm.

For more than fifty years, photographer Eric Luke has returned to Tory Island (Toraigh), Ireland’s most remote inhabited island, documenting its people, landscape, and unique way of life.

First visiting in the 1970s, when reaching the island meant hitching a ride on fishing and cargo boats across the Atlantic, Luke has built a remarkable long-term photographic record of a resilient Irish-speaking community shaped by isolation, tradition, and the sea. Many of the children he photographed on his earliest visits now appear in these pages as parents and grandparents, offering a rare portrait of continuity and change across generations.

Working primarily with black-and-white film, 'Toraigh / Tory Island' brings together five decades of images that capture the island’s enduring spirit, dramatic landscape, and close-knit community at the edge of Europe.

With an introduction by Diarmaid Ferriter.
