August Sander Books — Photo Museum Ireland

August Sander spent his working life trying to photograph the German people in their entirety. Working with calm determination across three eras - the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany - he cast the same lucid eye on bankers and boxers, soldiers and circus performers. His sole ambition, in his own words, was to tell the truth about humanity.

PMI holds two titles that together illuminate this project from different angles. The Photofile edition presents an authoritative critical overview of his practice. Persecuted/Persecutors publishes for the first time the identity photographs Sander made for persecuted Jews from around 1938, alongside wartime portraits that restore people excluded from official records to their rightful place in the story of the twentieth century.
