Daido Moriyama Books — Photo Museum Ireland

Daido Moriyama photographs the world as if the act of looking were itself desperate. Grainy, high-contrast, shot fast and close, his images of Tokyo's streets, bars and margins have a raw, compulsive energy that has made him one of the most influential photographers of the past sixty years.

PMI holds three titles representing distinct and significant moments in his practice. Moriyama: Quartet brings together four major bodies of work. The Photofile edition provides an authoritative critical overview. Most remarkably, Shashin Jidai 1981-1988 documents a pivotal and until recently little-known period: Moriyama's return to photography after nearly a decade of creative paralysis, working almost exclusively for the magazine Shashin Jidai with a free hand to experiment. More than eighty percent of his negatives from this period were lost. This publication - over 400 pages, with his original essays translated into English - is the only way to experience this body of work outside the original magazines.
